Charles was an avid chess player, playing with numerous chess clubs. 1989 - Granby, 1931 - Belgrave. Held the office of Vice-president and President at the Leicester Chess Club. Had played chess in England, Germany, France and Belgium.
Reported to have beaten Emanuel Lasker in a simultaneous display game put on by Lasker while he was world champion. Had some other success at simultaneous games with world class players, achieving a draw with Alexander Alekhine and a draw with Frank Marshall.
